NOBODY’S GODDESS Is Up for Pre-Order!

I’ve been eagerly awaiting the chance to direct those of you who asked to the pre-order links for NOBODY’S GODDESS, and it looks like they’re starting to come in! So far, I’ve only spotted the e-book, but there will be a paperback, so keep an eye out for news about that being available to pre-order as well.

WIPMarathon #12

I’m writing this ahead of time, although hopefully I’ll be able to post my link. I’m off to ALA Midwinter today! (Not as a librarian. Just as a book lover. And an author, I suppose!)

Last report wordcount + chapter count/scene count:  1. 85,589 words and 26 chapters in NOBODY’S GODDESS, latest round of revisions done and sent back to publisher

2. 88,514 words and 36 chapters in NEVER VEIL 3 (first draft finished in November but first edits needed)

Current report WC + CC/ SC: 1. 85,048 words and 26 chapters in NOBODY’S GODDESS, FINAL round of revisions complete and sent back to publisher! (Looks like I did nothing, but I did re-read it in its entirety yet again!)

2. 88,514 words and 36 chapters in NEVER VEIL 3… Oops. Yeah, I actually did nothing for that one!

WIP Issues This Month: Getting back into the groove of writing and/or editing. I did edit NOBODY’S GODDESS because I had a looming deadline, but somehow I just haven’t found the time and/or motivation to get to editing NEVER VEIL 3 like I need to.

Four things I learned this month in writing: 1. Promoting my book is a lot of fun and I wish I could get paid to do that instead of work so much, ha.

2. You can find typos (very few) even after you’ve read a book a dozen times and like 10 others have edited it!

3. I really need to figure out how to get to the place between work-hard-on-manuscript-every-day and barely-do-anything-for-it-all-month.

4. I’m apparently afraid of diving into a big edit.

What distracted me this month while writing: Quite a lot! I helped my boyfriend move, so the packing, moving and unpacking took us a while. We’re headed to ALA Midwinter in Chicago today, too. My cover reveal for NOBODY’S GODDESS was so much fun! (And I love my cover!) You can see it all over my website, but in case you otherwise missed it:

Goal for next month: I STILL need to add a new scene to NEVER VEIL 3 and fix a few things and then start the whole beginning-to-end read-through before passing it along to my beta. That’s been my goal for two months now and it just hasn’t happened. It’s been almost a year since I’ve been agent-less, too, and I feel sad thinking about how I’ll have nothing to query anytime soon, but I really need to finish NEVER VEIL 3’s initial edits before I get back to any of my on-hiatus manuscripts (or start something new). I also plan to start direct-subbing my project agents passed on last year soon.

It’s bittersweet to be posting this, the last cover for the Silver Moon Saga by Melissa Giorgio (a series for which I beta read), but here it is, and isn’t it lovely?

My Reads for 2014

Another year down, and less than a year until Nobody’s Goddess releases! We announced the deal this past January, but I actually knew as far back as September 2013 that Month9Books was interested and I had to sit on the news. I’ve been so excited about the release that it seemed like it would take forever, but the year has flown by. This year it’s gotten a new title and a cover (although I haven’t been able to share that with you yet) and has gone through a few more revisions. I also managed to write both sequels to it (one’s been turned in to my publisher and has begun revisions, one’s still a draft), which are due out in 2016 and 2017.

The past couple of years, I’ve posted a list of all the books I read (not including graphic novels and manga, of which I’ve read many) on this blog to celebrate New Year’s. Why continue to do that now that I have a Goodreads account? Well, I don’t always post what I’m reading there—unless I feel especially passionate about sharing it with you all. As a soon-to-be published author myself, I feel weird about assigning grades and criticizing other people’s novels, especially since if I don’t love something, it might just be my own tastes, you know? This is a way for me to celebrate how much I’ve read each year.

2014 NYC Books of Wonder Visit (Fierce Reads)

A year ago I posted about my first Books of Wonder event in New York City, and now I can post about my second. My boyfriend and I try to visit NYC every year to see some of his family. Coincidentally, my best friend Melissa Giorgio, whom I’ve known since before I even met my boyfriend, is a local, so I get to visit her each year, too! (We met through old-fashioned handwritten letters a long time ago, believe it or not. And we’re both writers who beta for one another.)

This year I was in NY in time for the Fierce Reads stop there. Like last year, I hadn’t read any books by any of the authors showcased, although Melissa and our mutual friend, book blogger and writer River, love a number of their books so I’m quite familiar with them. Ann Aguirre, Caragh M. O’Brien, Marie Rutkoski and Emmy Laybourne were there to discuss their books, writing in general and random, amusing trivia about them. All of the books seemed marvelous, but I limited myself to two paperbacks, which I got autographed. I love hearing YA authors speak. They’re always entertaining and have such great things to share about writing. If I’m ever lucky enough to give a talk about Nobody’s Goddess, I hope I can speak as well as they do!

WIPMarathon Check-In # 8 (4)

I held off on updating because I hoped I could add some more words today, but it just doesn’t look like that will be the case. Work won’t let up this month, and my stress in general has been through the roof! Still, it’s fun to work on the WIP when I can. Which was only twice this week…

Last Check-in Wordcount + ChapterCount (+ scene count if you’re revising): 21,839 words and eight and a half chapters

Current WC + CC (or SC): 22,821 words and eight and a half chapters (still working on that same chapter, lol)

WIP Issues this week: I’m entering a little uncertain ground in the WIP. This is still that “writing a few chapters off of only two sentences in the synopsis” bit, and so far it has gone well, but it’s starting to maybe drift a bit. I think I’m still on the right track, though.

What I learned this week in writing: So my progress this month hasn’t been as much as I’d like it to have been. Considering how busy and stressed I’ve been, the fact that I’ve gotten as much done as I have is pretty awesome.

What distracted me this week while writing: Work, my boyfriend’s car troubles (he wound up having to get a new/used one!), coming down with a cold and…

My big news! I think most of you saw my post earlier this week, but I can now share the fact that I’m going to debut with a YA fantasy in 2015 with Month9Books. Please add it to your to-read shelf on Goodreads if you have an account.

And now that that’s posted, I can share a more detailed summary of the story:

In a village of masked men, magic compels each man to love only one woman and to follow the commands of his “goddess” without question. And a man must stay masked until his goddess returns his love—and if she can’t or won’t, he remains masked forever.

She’s lost all her childhood friends as they’ve paired off, but the worst blow was when her closest companion, Jurij, finds his goddess in Noll’s own sister. Desperate to find a way to break this ancient spell, Noll instead discovers why no man has ever loved her: she is in fact the goddess of the mysterious lord of the village, a Byronic man who refuses to let Noll have her right as a woman to spurn him and who has the power to fight the curse. Thus begins a dangerous game between the two: the choice of woman versus the magic of man. And the stakes are no less than freedom and happiness, life and death—and neither Noll nor the veiled man is willing to lose.
