Gyre and Scions and Men Cover Reveal!

CR Banner

Today’s the day for a dual cover reveal: OF SCIONS AND MEN by Courtney Sloan and GYRE by Jessica Gunn! Both books are in the New Adult category and are being published by Curiosity Quills Press.

Here’s a bit about each book:

OF SCIONS AND MEN by Courtney Sloan (February 22nd, 2016)

Geopolitical babysitting while arresting preternatural killers, it’s just the daily grind for Scion Rowan Brady. Brash and sarcastic, Rowan has sold her life, her career and her very blood to the controlling paranormal ruling class of America, all to make sure her kid brother can eat. Now she uses her powers as a scion to kick the ass of any preternatural creature idiotic enough to break the rules and prey upon humanity without a license. All it costs her is her freedom and a pint or two per week to her new Master.

But juggling her job and duties becomes even tougher when she is tasked with keeping a contingency of diplomats from Canada from getting gnawed on. However, negotiations for an International Blood Exchange are interrupted when bodies start showing up.

Now Rowan must rely on her talent and wit to defend the society she despises to save the lives she’s sworn to protect. But as she stumbles into the truth, she chances becoming a target of not only these killers, but of her own government. With shifters, ghosts, vampires and psychics all watching her, can she stop the killings before she is silenced?

GYRE by Jessica Gunn (February 1st, 2016)

Trevor couldn’t believe his eyes when Chelsea teleported onto SeaSatellite5. The miracle is Trevor’s absolute worst nightmare. Chelsea is Atlantean, which would be fine if Trevor’s family weren’t Lemurian—enemies of Atlantis.

Then SeaSatellite5 uncovers Atlantean ruins and stumbles into the crosshairs of an ancient war. The Lemurians want the artifacts inside the ruins, and Trevor’s the only one onboard who recognizes the relics for what they really are: Link Pieces, tools used by ancient civilizations to wage their time-travel war.

Chelsea and Trevor must brave the gyre of lies surrounding them. If they can’t, Atlantis will be destroyed forever.

ABOUT COURTNEY SLOAN

Courtney SloanA New Orleans native, Courtney Sloan relocated to the hills of Central Maryland after Hurricane Katrina. There she lives with her husband and fellow author, J.P. Sloan, their son and their crazy German Shepherd pup. Adding to her writing life, Courtney is also a professor at the local college and enjoys learning a world of new ideas from her students as she teaches them about writing and communicating. Courtney’s New Orleans upbringing has left her with a love for the macabre and a flare for the next to normal. She writes speculative fiction with a variety of horror and sass mixed in for flavor.

She loves taking the world of politics that haunts us now, and adding the supernatural to create a gumbo of thrills to keep you up at night. A self-proclaimed lover of way too many fandoms, Courtney also loves crafting. From blankets to jams to stories, it’s always better homemade.

FALL FAR FROM THE TREE Cover Reveal — and Announcement!

I’m excited to reveal the cover for FALL FAR FROM THE TREE, my next YA fantasy, and also make a special announcement concerning its publication:

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000040_00007]

(Thank you, Berto Designs, for the amazing design job!)

Add it to your Goodreads list!

Terror. Callousness. Denial. Rebellion. How the four teenage children of leaders in the duchy and the neighboring empire of Hanaobi choose to adapt to their nefarious parents’ whims is a matter of survival.

Rohesia, daughter of the duke, spends her days hunting “outsiders,” fugitives who’ve snuck onto her father’s island duchy. That she lives when even children who resemble her are subject to death hardens her heart to tackle the task.

Fastello is the son of the “king” of the raiders who steal from the rich and share with the poor. When aristocrats die in the raids, Fastello questions what his peoples’ increasingly wicked methods of survival have cost them.

An orphan raised by a convent of mothers, Cateline can think of no higher aim in life than to serve her religion, even if it means turning a blind eye to the suffering of other orphans under the mothers’ care.

Kojiro, new heir to the Hanaobi empire, must avenge his people against the “barbarians” who live in the duchy, terrified the empress, his own mother, might rather see him die than succeed.

When the paths of these four young adults cross, they must rely on one another for survival—but the love of even a malevolent guardian is hard to leave behind.

I’m trying something different with this novel. After seeing so much success with my YA short story collection, DROWNED SILENCE, on Wattpad, I’ve decided to make FALL FAR FROM THE TREE a Wattpad-first novel, serialized one chapter a week–starting today, and updating every Sunday evening! I consider it a YA fantasy, but it’s darker than my other books so far and I’ll publish it under the Fantasy category.

So yes, you can start reading it now!

Does this mean the book won’t be for sale?

It will! Just not for a while. Eventually, it will be released as both an e-book and a paperback through Patchwork Press. I just can’t say for certain when, due to a number of factors. I’m hoping in late 2016, but definitely by fall 2017.

Why would I buy it if you’re going to have it all up for free on Wattpad first?

Although the version going on Wattpad is professionally edited and I’m happy with it, the version published through Patchwork will go through another round of edits and the story could change. Plus, many readers prefer reading on their e-readers or having a paperback in their hands–or reading it all in one go instead of waiting week to week. Also, I’d really appreciate the support from readers so I can keep writing more books!

What about THE NEVER VEIL series (NOBODY’S GODDESS books 2 and 3)?

They’re still on track for publication in 2016 (April 12) and 2017 (first quarter) the traditional way, through bookstores online and brick-and-mortar. FALL FAR FROM THE TREE is not related to this series in any way.

My Next Book: FALL FAR FROM THE TREE

While I know a number of you are anxiously awaiting the second book in the NEVER VEIL series (tentatively July 2016), I’m proud to announce I’m publishing another fantasy book soon with Patchwork Press!

Read my introduction here!

FALL FAR FROM THE TREE is a dark YA fantasy I like to think of as Marvel Comics’ Runaways meets Game of Thrones. It has four first-person POVs (crazy, I know) and weaves the story of four very different young adults, each raised by terrible people.

Add FALL FAR FROM THE TREE to your Goodreads to-read list!

Team Orange: YA Scavenger Hunt Stop

The Fall 2015 YASH is over! I’m going to leave Cecil’s bonus material up, though, since it’s pretty cool and needn’t be exclusive. 😀 Enjoy!

Orange Team

I’m hosting Cecil Castellucci, author of STAR WARS: MOVING TARGET A PRINCESS LEIA ADVENTUREMoving_Target

Princess Leia returns for an all-new adventure in this thrilling upper middle grade novel. Set between Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars: The Return of the Jedi, the story follows the warrior princess as she leads a ragtag group of rebels on a dangerous mission against the evil Galactic Empire. Hidden in the story are also hints and clues about the upcoming film Star Wars: The Force Awakens, making this a must-read for fans old and new.

Cecil Castellucci is the author of books and graphic novels for young adults including Boy Proof, The Plain Janes, First Day on Earth, The Year of the Beasts, Tin Star, Stone in the Sky, Moving Target: A Princess Leia Adventure and the Eisner-nominated Odd Duck. Her picture book, Grandma’s Gloves, won the California Book Award Gold Medal. Her short stories have been published in Strange Horizons, YARN, Tor.com, and various anthologies, including Teeth, After and Interfictions 2. She is the Children’s Correspondence Coordinator for The Rumpus, a two-time Macdowell Fellow and the founding YA Editor at the LA Review of Books. She lives in Los Angeles.

Cecil prepared some incredible treats for those of you on the hunt: Star Wars songs, including one she wrote and sung herself! (♥ó㉨ò)ノ♡ What an amazingly talented individual! Here’s her message:

I couldn’t believe it when I was asked to be the one to write the new Princess Leia novel for the Journey to the Force Awakens Series. Moving Target takes place between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, which is such an interesting time for Princess Leia.  I’ve been a long time Star Wars fan ever since I saw Episode IV: A New Hope.  It’s the reason I became a writer!  Before I wrote books, I was in a band where I played under the name Nerdy Girl and Cecil Seaskull. (P.S. You can find my music on Spotify, iTunes and other streaming places.)  On my first album, I wrote a song about watching Star Wars for the first time. So here for you is my song Nerdy Girl by my band Nerdy Girl.  And to continue your nerdy enjoyment, I’ve made a little list of some other songs about Star Wars that I enjoy that I think you’ll enjoy!

May the Force Be With You!

THE FADING DUSK (Smoke and Mirrors #1) Release Day!

Melissa Giorgio‘s brand new series, Smoke and Mirrors, begins today with THE FADING DUSK. Long-time blog readers know I’m a huge fan of her works (but also that she’s one of my best friends 😉 ) and her beta reader/editor, but I can’t recommend the book enough. It’s got magic and a Victorian-era vibe, but it’s in a made-up world. There’s danger and romance, and twists you won’t see coming. (I especially loved the twist on the “typical love triangle.”) Check it out!

FadingDuskFront

In the gritty city of Dusk, seventeen-year-old Irina makes her living as the street magician Bantheir’s assistant. The job isn’t glamorous, but she loves the crowds, the shows, and most of all, the illusion of magic. But Irina’s world is shattered the night she is arrested and charged as Bantheir’s accomplice to murder—murder by magic.

Real magic, the kind that’s been forbidden since the old wars.

Irina finds the idea of flashy showman Bantheir using actual magic to kill someone laughable, but she’s the only one who sees how ridiculous the claim is. But how can she convince everyone Bantheir is innocent when they’ve already made up their minds? Desperate, Irina must decide who she can trust to help her win her freedom. Is the surly, handsome Captain Leonid telling the truth when he says he believes Irina is innocent, or is he just using her to get to Bantheir? What about Aden, the sweet soldier and longtime fan of Irina’s who claims he’s on her side?

Irina said she wanted to know the truth, but when she stumbles across a dark secret that changes everything, will she be strong enough to survive?

My New Project! Read Drowned Silence for Free!

A few NOBODY’S GODDESS readers have contacted me to ask about my next projects. Besides NOBODY’S LADY (July 2016) and NOBODY’S PAWN (February 2017) and a short story that will be published this fall (I can’t share the details yet!), I didn’t have any other news to share.

However, I decided to join Wattpad. You can read the prologue to NOBODY’S GODDESS there, as well as a scene from NOBODY’S GODDESS from the lord’s point of view–for FREE! Now I’m going to try serializing a short story there that won’t be published anywhere else. I’d love it if you read it and stayed tuned for future installments:

drownedcover2

Living in a home dripping with silent tension, lonely teen Dylan finds refuge at school—until Kelsey is assigned to be his class project partner. Kelsey, the school outcast, is allergic to water, dresses in Gothic Lolita fashion and refuses to use technology from past the 19th century, which makes working together difficult to say the least.

Invited to Kelsey’s house during her sister’s Halloween party, Dylan uncovers a frightening connection between Kelsey and a death that took place on her property years before.

A serialized YA contemporary horror short story from the author of Nobody’s Goddess (the Never Veil Series).
