SCAVENGER HUNT POST
PattyB-01
Today, I am hosting Patty Blount on my website for the YA Scavenger Hunt!
Patty Blount grew up quiet and invisible in Queens, NY, but found her voice writing smart and strong characters willing to fight for what’s right. Today, she’s the award-winning author of edgy, emotional contemporary romance. Powered by way too much chocolate, Patty gives a voice to characters facing realistic situations like rape (SOME BOYS, 2014), bullying (SEND, 2012), and grief (NOTHING LEFT TO BURN, 2015). She enjoys hearing from her readers so visit her website or follow her on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.

EXCLUSIVE CONTENT

someone

From the award-winning author of Some Boys comes an unflinching examination of rape culture that delves into a family torn apart by sexual assault.

It’s been two years since the night that changed Ashley’s life. Two years since she was raped by her brother’s teammate. And a year since she sat in a court and watched as he was given a slap on the wrist sentence. But the years have done nothing to stop the pain.

It’s been two years of hell for Derek. His family is totally messed up and he and his sister are barely speaking. He knows he handled it all wrong. Now at college, he has to come to terms with what happened, and the rape culture that he was inadvertently a part of that destroyed his sister’s life.

When it all comes to a head at Thanksgiving, Derek and Ashley have to decide if their relationship is able to be saved. And if their family can ever be whole again.

Trigger: Boys will be boys is never an excuse…
I’m Patty Blount, author of SOMEONE I USED TO KNOW, a book about healing from rape in a culture steeped in excuses for the attackers and blame for the victims.
Main character Ashley Lawrence was raped in her freshman year when the football team’s annual scavenger hunt tradition took a perverted turn: points for sexual activity. Ashley did everything she could — she endured the examination, she went public, she testified…but her attacker still got a slap-on-the–wrist sentence. Even worse, her own brother doesn’t think what happened is that big a deal. It’s two years later when the story opens. Ashley and her brother barely speak and their family is disintegrating.
When her school hires a new coach to reinstate the football program, Ashley implements a pledge drive to raise awareness. The drive is a big success but it’s not enough for Ashley. She needs to do more to help people understand why so many women have stories about sexual assault, why so many survivors don’t report their attacks, and why it’s so important that we stop making excuses for boys who think it’s no big deal to look up skirts or share naked pictures of girls.
She starts a Pinterest board that she calls Before & After. Her board is full of ads that promote sexual violence. Then, she Photoshops those ads to show how they SHOULD have been published.
I started Ashley’s board and filled it with Before pictures. But mine is missing the After versions. The board is public. Feel free to pin images that offend you along with reasons why. It’s my hope we’ll make this go viral so people will finally understand why we’re so fed up. Share it, tweet it, post it, blog about it.
Let’s tell the world that we’re through with their attempts at normalizing sexual harassment, assault, and rape.
See the Pinterest here! (Trigger warnings: It’s full of offensive advertising that promotes sexualized violence and rape culture that Ashley changes to be less misogynstic and sexist.) Click on the screenshot or link for the full board.

And don’t forget to enter the contest for a chance to win a ton of books by me, Patty Blount, and more! To enter, you need to know that my favorite number is 4. Add up all the favorite numbers of the authors on the pink team and you’ll have all the secret code to enter for the grand prize!
